The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team is poised to get back in the win column to cap off the squad’s swing through Music City with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at Tennessee State on Saturday, Jan. 7. Tipoff from the Gentry Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the frontend of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk men’s basketball team.
The Skyhawks (4-12, 1-2 OVC) will look to get back to their winning ways after dropping their first back-to-back conference outings since Feb. 13, 2010 – a streak 106 games – after falling to preseason OVC pick Belmont on the road 71-66. UT Martin fell behind by 19 points in the first quarter before making it a contest down the stretch before ultimately falling by five points in a nationally televised contest. In the game it was sophomore guard Emanye Robertson who led all players in scoring with 19 points while Ansley Eubank (14 points) and Janekia Mason (12 points) also scored in double figures.
The game also serves as a matchup of two of the OVC’s best coaches in history as Tennessee State’s Larry Joe Inman ranks as the conference’s all-time wins leader with 540 career victories in 32 seasons. UT Martin’s Kevin McMillan currently ranks second on the league’s active wins leaderboard – only behind Inman - while sitting tied with TSU’s former head coach and current athletic director Teresa Phillips with 146 career victories.
Tennessee State (5-7, 0-2 OVC) enters the contest riding a two-game losing streak to Murray State (80-72) and Southeast Missouri (75-67) to open conference play. The Lady Tigers are led by former Conference USA Freshman of the Year Olivia Jones who averages 14.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in six games this season. Jayda Johnson (13.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and I’mani Davis (11.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg) also average in double figures.
Saturday’s matchup marks the 60th meeting between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a 32-27 advantage. The Skyhawks have won nine of the last 10 matchups against the Lady Tigers – by an average of 14.2 points per game - including a 77-50 victory in the team’s previous matchup.
