The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to snap a six-game road losing streak with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont on Thursday, Jan. 5. Tipoff from the Curb Event Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
For the second consecutive year, UT Martin and Belmont will battle on national television, highlighting two of the OVC’s most dominating teams. The Skyhawks enter the contest as the OVC’s reigning three-time regular season champions while the Bruins entered the season as the preseason favorites to steal the league crown. During the Skyhawks three-year reign atop the OVC, UT Martin has posted a remarkable 46-4 overall mark while Belmont has posted an impressive 35-15 record.
The Skyhawks (4-11, 1-1 OVC) enter the contest looking to rebound from an 89-68 setback to Morehead State which snapped a 27-game conference home winning streak which ranked fourth nationally. The 21-point loss marked the largest margin of defeat in OVC play for the Skyhawks at home since the 2008-09 season. Despite the setback, the Skyhawks will look to the team’s leading scorers Myah Taylor (12.3 ppg), Emanye Robertson (10.7 ppg) and Kendall Spray (10.7 ppg) to right the ship.
UT Martin is under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan who enters the contest currently tied for fifth on the OVC’s all-time wins leaderboard with an overall record of 146-94 – including a 94-24 mark in league play. Belmont is led by Cameron Newbauer who has posted a 62-49 mark in fourth seasons leading the Bruins.
Belmont (10-5, 2-0 OVC) looks to build upon the team’s recent four-game winning streak which includes conference victories over Eastern Illinois (77-58) and Austin Peay (80-71) last week. The Bruins feature three preseason All-OVC selections in Darby Maggard (13.9 ppg), Kylee Smith (13.5 ppg) and Sally McCabe (11.0 ppg) after notching the program’s second NCAA Tournament berth in 2016.
Thursday’s matchup marks the 30th meeting between the two programs in series history with Belmont holding an 18-11 advantage. Despite the series record, UT Martin has owned the matchup as of late, winning the past five games and seven of the last eight overall. Belmont’s last victory came in the Curb Event Center on Jan. 12, 2013. In last year’s meeting, UT Martin squeaked out an 81-79 victory as Maggard’s shot at the buzzer just missed the mark.
