SECOND HALF RUN IS TOO MUCH AS SKYHAWK WOMEN FALL 72-55 TO OHIO
November 18, 2016
ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team gave Ohio a tough matchup until a 16-0 second quarter run proved to be too much to overcome, dropping the 72-55 decision in a Friday matinee.
The Skyhawks (1-3) playing it their fourth game in the past week began the contest neck-and-neck with the two-time defending Mid-American Conference champions before a 16-0 second quarter run proved to be too much to overcome down the stretch. The deficit would be compounded by yet another 21-turnover performance for the Skyhawks while shooting just 35.7 percent from the floor.
UT Martin would be led by freshman Kendall Spray who notched her third consecutive game in double figures while posting a new career high with 17 points on the afternoon. Junior wing Ashton Feldhaus joined in the action by tallying 13 points while Ansley Eubank paced the squad with eight rebounds.
Ohio (2-0) saw three players score in double figures in the team’s home debut. The Bobcats would be led by Quiera Lampkins’ double-double, tallying 16 points and 11 rebounds. The duo of Amani Burke (13 points) and Kelly Karlis (11 points) also reach double figures despite shooting just 36.1 percent from the field as a team.
The first quarter would be played evenly throughout much of the period with both teams taking a maximum lead of three during the span. A three-pointer by Spray would give the Skyhawks a brief 8-5 lead at the 7:26 mark. The Bobcats would answer right back in the final two minutes of the quarter with a three-pointer by Taylor Agler to give the home squad a 16-13 lead heading into the second.
The story would stay the same to open the second quarter with the lead changing hands seven times. With the game at a 23-21 margin, UT Martin would suffer a key injury to Emily Eubank which not only ended the sophomore’s contest, but sent shockwaves through the roster. Following the emotional swing, the Skyhawks would struggle down the stretch as the Bobcats finished the first half on a critical 16-0 run to take 39-23 lead into halftime.
Ohio would look to put the game away in the second half, pushing the lead out to 24 points on a pair of occasions in the third quarter. After cutting the deficit to 14 points three different times, the Skyhawks could not get any closer as every shot was answered on the other side of the court. With the margin down to 14 points with seven minutes to play, Ohio would respond with a 13-3 run to make it a 58-34 contest midway through the period.
The Skyhawks would cut the margin to as close at 17 points in the final period following a pair of free throws from Emanye Robertson to end the day’s scoring. The streak would not be enough for the Skyhawks however as they dropped the decision 72-55.
UT Martin will wrap up its four-game road trip on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at former Ohio Valley Conference rival Samford. Tipoff from the Pete Hanna Center is scheduled for noon.
