November 17, 2016
LEBANON, Tenn. – Matthew Butler, a redshirt junior guard at the University of Tennessee at Martin, was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week today.
Butler started off his Skyhawk career with a pair of double-digit scoring performances, including a historic debut at Ole Miss last Friday. In that game, the Rhode Island transfer poured in a game-high 25 points while sinking seven trifectas. Three of those treys came in a stretch of 1:35 to pull UT Martin within a single point with just under a minute to go before the Rebels were able to escape with an 86-83 win. The feat resulted in the most points by a Skyhawk in his team debut since two-time All-American Lester Hudson scored 35 points in 2007.
Two days later in an 88-80 home victory over UT Rio Grande Valley, Butler compiled 14 points while logging a game-high 38 minutes running the point for the Skyhawks.
For the week, Butler averaged 19.5 points per game on 45.2 percent shooting (14-for-31). The Memphis, Tenn. native connected on eight of his 18 shots from three-point land (44.4 percent) and also knocked down each of this three free throw attempts.
Butler currently ranks fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference in three-point field goals made (3.3 per game), ninth in assists (4.0 per game) and ninth in minutes played (34.3 per game). He ranks third on the team in scoring, pumping in 16.0 points per outing.
Butler and the Skyhawks are back in action on Friday, Nov. 18 when they host Cleveland State at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
