BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After 36 holes at the Samford Intercollegiate, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team is perched at the top of the team leaderboard after two strong rounds today at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.
The Skyhawks carded the lowest score in each round today, shooting a cumulative score of 589 (+13). UT Martin leads the tournament by six strokes over host Samford after accounting for rounds of 292 (+4) this morning and 297 (+9) this afternoon.
“We are playing on a true professional golf course,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “The weather conditions were perfect and it is unbelievable how good the greens are. You have to strike the ball well to score low rounds here and we did a great job of doing that today. I am proud that everyone contributed and we had a good showing today.”
UT Martin boasts four of the top 11 golfers in the individual standings. Coming off back-to-back tournament victories, Hunter Richardson (142, -2) sits in third place after rounds of 72 and 70 today. He is two strokes behind tournament leader Alec Stopperich of Samford.
Gavin Shellnut produced a 74 in both rounds today to stand in sixth place with a 148 (+4). Austin Swafford is not too far behind with a 149 (+5) after shooting a 72 this morning and a 77 in the afternoon round. Tyler Guy (74, 76) wrapped up the team scoring with a total of 150 (+6). Jack Story shot an 83 in the opening round but showed improvement with a 79 this afternoon to finish his day with a 162 (+18).
“We like where we are going into the final round but we need to putt a little better and improve on our par-3 scoring tomorrow,” Carpenter said. “We faded a little on the last four holes today but if we can finish strong tomorrow, we will be in good shape.”
The Skyhawks will go for their second win of the season tomorrow when the third and final round begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
