NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s cross country team leaned heavily on its freshman class at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships where the team notched a sixth place finish.

UT Martin entered the season picked to finish at the bottom of the league in the preseason poll before a strong freshman class had its own plans in mind. Anchored by five freshman scorers, the Skyhawks notched a sixth place finish, the highest mark in the OVC Championship since the 2011 season.

Freshman Edwin Kurgat paced a talented freshman class which featured all five of the team’s scorers once again. A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kurgat earned All-OVC second team honors with an 11th place finish with a time of 25:22.8 in the men’s 8k. Kurgat has paced the Skyhawks in each meet this season while finishing just over a second out of the Top-10.

The freshman duo of Ryan Ford and Austin Rogers also posted big performances, earning top-25 finishes. Ford posted a 21st place finish with a time of 25:54.8 while Rogers finished 23rd with a time of 26:00.4.

Freshman Marcos Macias joined in the action with a finish of 27:32.5 while Joey Palumbo was close behind at 27:43.5 to wrap up the team’s scoring-five. Today also marked the final competitive meet for senior Joey DeSantis.

“With all five of our scoring guys being freshman, the future is very bright,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “The men were determined to prove the preseason rankings wrong. This is just the beginning for a talented group!”
