CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo – The 2016 season concluded Thursday night for the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team as they dropped a 4-1 road decision to Southeast Missouri.

The finale also marks the final game for Brampton, Ontario native Saphyra Coombs-James. Her 28 goals ranks third all-time in Skyhawk history, while her 175 career shots ties her for fifth. The senior concludes her career tied for eighth in assists (10), and third all-time in points (66).

UT Martin got off to a quick start with an early goal from freshman Nicole Collins. The Newark, NY native was able to slide one past Redhawk goalkeeper Kindra Lierz in just the fifth minute of the contest to notch the first goal of her career and put the Skyhawks ahead 1-0.

SEMO quickly responded with a goal by Paige Blankenheim just three minutes later to even the score 1-1. Shortly after, Ohio Valley Conference’s leading scorer Natasha Minor scored her 12th of the season in the 15th minute to put the Redhawks ahead 2-1. Coombs-James and sophomore forward Danae Kaldaridou each managed attempts at the SEMO goal prior to the first half expiring, but neither were able to find the mark and the Skyhawks took a 2-1 deficit into the half.

UT Martin threatened early in the second half on a header by Coombs-James off a Katelyn Colvin corner that was narrowly saved by Lierz. Midfielder Sophia Sharos was also able to get a shot on target but ultimately was unable to beat the Redhawk keeper. SEMO forward Esmerelda Gonzales was able to extend the Redhawk lead in the 61st minute as she collected a cross in the center of the box and beat Skyhawk goalkeeper MaKenzie Crawford to push the lead to 3-1. A flurry from UT Martin’s Amy McGivern in the 69th minute was also stuffed by Lierz as the Skyhawks were looking to claw back.

Ultimately, the SEMO defense and goalkeeper proved too much as the Redhawks and Gonzales tacked on an insurance goal in the 88th minute to down UT Martin 4-1. Coombs-James paced the Skyhawks with three shots, while Crawford was able to score four saves in the loss.

UT Martin wraps up the 2016 season with an overall record of 4-14, including a 1-9 record in OVC play.
