SKYHAWKS CONCLUDE SEASON WITH ROAD TRIP TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ON THURSDAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2016 season will conclude this Thursday, Oct. 27 for the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team as they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to take on Southeast Missouri.
This year has been a season of near misses for the Skyhawks (4-13, 1-8 OVC). Of their eight Ohio Valley Conference losses, six have been one-goal decisions, including two overtime losses. Despite outshooting Morehead State 34-10 this past Thursday night, UT Martin was unable to find the winning goal as they dropped a 2-1 overtime decision.
Lone senior Saphyra Coombs-James and midfielder Amy McGivern have paced the Skyhawk offense this season with 13 points each. Danae Kaldaridou (10) and Katelyn Colvin (7) have also helped contribute to UT Martin’s 1.24 goals per game average. MaKenzie Crawford has seen the bulk of the action in goal for the Skyhawks during conference play, recording 48 saves, including a season high eight saves against Eastern Kentucky on Oct. 14.
UT Martin will be looking to end the season on a high note and continue their recent success against the Redhawks. The Skyhawks have earned points in each of the last six contests against SEMO (8-6-4, 2-4-3 OVC) including a 2-1 victory in their most recent trip to Cape Girardeau in 2014. The two programs have a history of close matches with five of their last eight games each reaching double-overtime. Despite UT Martin’s recent success, the Redhawks hold the all-time series lead against the Skyhawks 10-6-5.
In her 17th season at the helm for SEMO, head coach Heather Nelson has compiled a 165-107-40 record including guiding the Redhawks to five OVC championships. SEMO is led offensively by Natasha Minor, who has notched 11 goals on 63 shots and has recorded two assists on the year. Esmerelda Gonzales has earned 13 points for the Redhawks as well, scoring four goals and five assists. SEMO is coming off a 3-1 victory this past Sunday night against Morehead State and are looking take down the Skyhawks for the first time since 2010.
