UTM VOLLEYBALL LOOKS TO GAIN GROUND IN OVC STANDINGS THIS WEEKEND ON THE ROAD

MARTIN, Tenn. – After a lengthy home stretch, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team heads back on the road for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matches against Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 21 and Morehead State on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Halfway through the league schedule, the Skyhawks (6-17, 2-6 OVC) are just one game out of the projected eight-team OVC Tournament field. UT Martin has eight matches remaining in the regular season before the OVC Tournament takes place on Nov. 17-21.
The Skyhawks split a pair of matches last weekend, defeating Tennessee State (3-2) and falling to Belmont (3-1). UT Martin was led by Jemima Idemudia, who was named adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week after averaging 3.33 kills per set on a .373 attack percentage. She also added a team-high eight blocks (0.89 per set) to pace the Skyhawks defensively. Idemudia now ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in both blocks (1.12 per set, fifth) and points (3.49 per set, eighth).
Also guiding UT Martin last week was Kelly Lean (10.89 assists per set) and Colleen Larson (4.78 digs per set). Lean ranks second in the OVC with 10.01 assists per set while Larson’s 3.68 digs per set average ranks 10th in the conference.
Morehead State (8-13, 4-4 OVC) also posted a split in a pair of five-set road decisions last weekend, falling at SIUE on Friday before turning away Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Maddie Fella had double-digit kills in each match while hitting .391 for the week while Bailey Nichol handed out 10.10 assists per set for an offense that hit .199 in the two matches. Reigning OVC Freshman of the Year Merideth Jewell ranks fourth in the league with 3.36 kills per set.
Eastern Kentucky comes into the weekend with an 8-12 overall record and a 3-5 OVC mark. The Colonels were on the road last weekend, defeating Eastern Illinois by a 3-2 margin before a three-set loss at SIUE. Nikki Drost (3.62 kills per set) and setter Rachel Woody (2.0 kills, 7.12 assists, 3.75 digs per set) guided Eastern Kentucky during last weekend’s split. Mallory Maxwell heads the Colonel defense with 4.70 digs per set, which ranks second in the OVC.
