October 19, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – In its final home match of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team welcomes Morehead State (5-10-2, 2-5-1 OVC) to Skyhawk Field on Thursday, Oct. 20. It will also be senior night, as Saphyra Coombs-James plays in her final home game as a Skyhawk.
The Brampton, Ontario native has made her mark on the UT Martin record books during her career. She currently ranks third all-time in points (66), goals (28), sixth in shots attempted (162) and is tied for eighth in assists (10). The forward has amassed several awards over her career including the 2012 OVC Freshman of the Year, 2012 First Team All-OVC and 2015 Second Team All-OVC.
“Saph has been a great example of perseverance,” said head coach Phil McNamara. “Not everyone comes back from an ACL injury, but she stuck with it and her stats show how successful she was in her time here. She’s been a major threat for our opponents all four years and has the accolades to prove it. We hope we can send her out with a win tomorrow night.”
The Skyhawks are hoping to end their home schedule on a high note after falling to Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech this past weekend. UT Martin holds the all-time series lead 13-8-2 over Morehead State including a 2-0 victory last season in Morehead, Ky. At home, the Skyhawks hold a 7-4-1 advantage, while Coombs-James has notched a goal and an assist in the team’s last two meetings.
Amy McGivern (11) and Danae Kaldaridou (10) have each notched double-digit points for the first time in their Skyhawk careers this season. The sophomores, along with Coombs-James, have paced the UT Martin offense that is averaging 1.25 goals per game.
The Eagles are led by freshman forward Ashely Ritchie, who has scored five times this season on 39 shots. Her 12 points lead Morehead State who is coming off a 3-0 loss at Belmont on Sunday. Eva Ýr Helgadóttir, will likely get the start in net for the Eagles. The 6-2 freshman out of Reykjavik, Iceland holds a 5-10-1 record this season including 2 clean sheets while allowing 1.67 GAA.
