RICHARDSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT AS UTM FINISHES THIRD AT AUSTIN PEAY
October 18, 2016
DICKSON, Tenn. – Junior Hunter Richardson was responsible for the best score of the final round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate today, securing medalist honors to help the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team round out another successful fall tournament.
Richardson’s 71 today completed a three-round total of 213 (-3), as the Clarksville, Tenn. native won the tournament by three strokes. It was his second win in as many tournaments and the fifth of his career, as he accumulated four birdies today to finish atop the field of 60 participants.
As a team, the Skyhawks shot a 297 (+9) today to place third in the team standings. UT Martin’s 884 (+20) ranked first amongst the seven Ohio Valley Conference teams who took part in the tournament.
“It was a tough two days as the wind got stronger in every round,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “The gusts got up to 25 miles per hour today and that affected everybody’s scoring in the final round. It was a good tournament for us – we were in the hunt for first place until the very end and we got a chance to look at everybody, as all eight of our players took part in the tournament. I’m so proud of Hunter and his win – it is very well-deserved.”
Jack Story shot a 73 today and nearly missed out on his second straight top-10 finish with a 221 (+5) for the tournament to place 11th. Austin Swafford carded a 77 today to wrap up the tournament with a 14th place finish after tallying a final score of 222 (+6).
Gavin Shellnut posted a third-round 76 to finish with a 230 (+14) for the tournament while Ross Redmont carded an 84 for a final tally of 245 (+29).
Playing as an individual, Tyler Guy tied his best finish of the season – finishing 11th overall with a 221 (+5). The redshirt senior out of Clarksville, Tenn. shot a 73 in the final round today after registering three birdies. Zach Haynes (77 today) and Cameron Smith (82 today) also competed as individuals and finished with final scores of 227 (+11) and 231 (+15), respectively.
UT Martin returns to action on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 when it heads to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford Intercollegiate.
