Regional Rankings

NEW ORLEANS, La. –
After cracking the regional rankings for the first time two weeks ago, the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s cross country team continued its ascension into the national conversation by jumping up to No. 13 in the South Region rankings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

UT Martin jumped two spots in the regional polls after a strong performance at the Alabama Crimson Classic in which the Skyhawks defeated a pair of ranked opponents from both the South and South Central regions to notch the program’s highest ranking in school history. Racing with a target on their back as the No. 15 squad, the Skyhawks not only defeated OVC foes Belmont and Tennessee Tech but knocked off the South Region’s No. 12 ranked program Georgia Tech and the South Central Region’s No. 12 ranked LSU squad.

The Skyhawks were led by the strong performance of senior standout Ann Asipan who finished fourth in the field with a time of 20:47.2 in the women’s 6k. Asipan led a strong pack which featured the freshman duo of Emma Edmonds and Kara Martin alongside junior Amelia Martin.

Ole Miss leads the South Region followed by Mississippi State, Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Lipscomb, Georgia, Auburn, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss, UT Martin, Jacksonville and Samford.

“Jumping two spots in the rankings is a nice acknowledgement of what we are doing her in such a short time span,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “Our focus is now at the conference meet and we are looking forward to the opportunity to improve at the region meet.”

UT Martin will now turn its focus to the Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29. The championship will be held at Vaughn’s Creek Cross Country Course at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn. The Skyhawks will look to vastly eclipse the team’s predicted preseason finish of sixth.
