TUSCALOSA, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country team continued to make national waves as the South Region’s No. 15 ranked Skyhawk women’s squad knocked off a pair of regionally ranked foes and a handful of Ohio Valley Conference teams at the Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama.
Competing in their first meet as a regionally ranked squad, the Skyhawk women made significant strides in their final race before the OVC Championships. Racing with a target on their back the Skyhawks not only defeated OVC foes Belmont and Tennessee Tech but knocked off the South Region’s No. 12 ranked program Georgia Tech and the South Central Region’s No. 12 ranked LSU squad. In addition to the aforementioned programs, UT Martin upended Southeastern Conference opponents South Carolina and Tennessee.
UT Martin was led by senior standout Ann Asipan who finished fourth overall with a time of 20:47.2 in the women’s 6k. The Skyhawks were supported by freshman Emma Edmonds who posted a personal-record with a time of 22:00.9. Joining in the field was junior Amelia Martin who bested her previous personal-record by nearly 50 seconds with a 22:23.1 finish.
On the men’s side the Skyhawks made progress towards closing the scoring gap from positions 1-5 in the team’s final tuneup before the OVC Championships. Freshman Edwin Kurgat paced the Skyhawks in the men’s 8k race while sophomore Leonel Perez jumped into the scoring grouping.
“Both teams are making great progress, in particular our talented group of ladies who realized we have a great opportunity to be great,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “I am very proud of the continued efforts of both squads.”
UT Martin will now turn its focus to final preparations for the OVC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29. The championship will be held at Vaughn’s Creek Cross Country Course at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn.
