MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season at Jacksonville State, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team hosts two crucial home games this weekend looking to pick up vital points in hopes of keeping their OVC tournament chances alive. The Skyhawks will take on Eastern Kentucky this Friday, Oct. 14 and then will meet up with Tennessee Tech on Sunday, Oct. 16.
UT Martin (4-10, 1-5 OVC) is no stranger to close matches as five of the six OVC contests it has competed in this year have been decided by just one goal. Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, they have been on the wrong end of those close contests for most of the year. Head coach Phil McNamara believes that if his team continues to play at a high level, then things will start to fall their way.
“We’ve been as good as our opposition in four out of the five previous games and unfortunately have come away with nothing to show for it,” McNamara said. “I think it is a huge advantage to have three out of the last four games at home. We will take it one game at a time and find a way to build off this past win.”
Sophomore Amy McGivern has stepped up in recent weeks as the team’s top performer. McGivern was selected as OVC Adidas Co-Offensive Player of the Week earlier on Tuesday for her efforts in the win over Jacksonville State. The native of Ballynahinch, Northern Ireland recorded an assist and the game-winning goal to take down the Gamecocks. Katelyn Colvin also tallied her second goal of the season in the contest.
The Skyhawks welcome the much improved Eastern Kentucky Colonels (8-4, 3-2 OVC) to Skyhawk Field on Friday night. After only recording four wins in 2015, the Colonels have notched eight victories this season including three in OVC play. Eastern Kentucky is led by Jordan Foster who leads the team in points (12) recording four goals and four assists. Anna Hall will likely be the goalkeeper for the Colonels. She has started in all 12 games this season allowing just 11 goals on a 0.92 GAA with seven shutouts.
UT Martin will then turn their attention to in-state rival Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles (6-5-3, 2-1-2 OVC) are led by senior Abi Gearing, who has scored five times on the year. Junior Karigan Owens leads the squad in points (13) and ranks first in the OVC in assists with seven. Goalkeeper Kari Naerdemann has got the start in all 14 games allowing only 11 goals on a 0.74 GAA including six clean sheets.
Kickoff for Friday night’s contest against Eastern Kentucky is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday afternoon’s match versus Tennessee Tech is slated to begin at 1 p.m., and will be available on the OVC Digital Network. Both contests can be followed via live stats by following the links above.
