SKYHAWKS SHATTER PERSONAL BESTS AT OLE MISS OPEN

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squads competed this past weekend at the Ole Miss Open. The eight-team field included teams from Kentucky, Murray State, Jacksonville State, North Georgia, Memphis and host Ole Miss.
The Skyhawks mixed squad topped several career-highs as individuals, while as a team shooting their highest air rifle score (2327) in two years. Kaitlin Korinek (587), Brigitte Curcio (583), Alex Bapties (570) and Alex Tamboli (570) all toppled their previous career-highs in the air rifle discipline, while Korinek (571) and Andre Delcalzo (555) each set new career bests in the smallbore.
Joe Martin continued his hot start to the year firing an 1167 total, including a 587 in the air rifle. The 4596 total was the mixed squad’s highest score in the past two seasons by 19 points.
The women’s team also turned in a solid performance with Alyson Sylvester setting a new career-high in the smallbore (564), as well as Ashley Coots (579), Jennifer Plocinik (573) and Amanda Mayo (544) each surpassing their previous career-highs in the air rifle. The women’s squad’s 4536 was their best total in two years, including a 2249 in smallbore which was their best finish by 19 points in the last two seasons.
“Overall, I feel like it was a really good weekend,” said head coach Bob Beard. “We set 10 new career-highs and shot our best score as a team in the past two years. We proved we can shoot like champions under pressure and are looking for more success going forward.”
The next outing for the squads will be Saturday, Oct. 29 when the Skyhawks travel to Memphis.
