UTM GOLF WINS SKYHAWK FALL CLASSIC; RICHARDSON CLAIMS FIRST PLACE HONORS
October 4, 2016
BUCHANAN, Tenn. – For the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2007, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team brought home a first-place finish in the Skyhawk Fall Classic, as UT Martin produced not only the team but the individual winner in the 11-team, 69-player tournament held at Paris Landing State Park.
The Skyhawks posted a final round score of 292 (+4) today, rounding out the tournament with a final score of 860 (-4). UT Martin won the tournament by six strokes over second-place John A. Logan, who shot a tournament-best 291 in the final round to end with an overall score of 866 (+2).
“The course played tougher today – the scores will tell you that,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We hit the ball well today and had trouble making some putts but we wound up shooting under-par for the tournament so I can’t complain. It’s good to get a win under our belt and we’d like to thank the folks at Paris Landing State Park for their gracious hospitality once again.”
Individually, Hunter Richardson claimed his fourth career tournament victory with a total score of 210 (-6). The junior from Clarksville, Tenn. carded an even-par 72 this morning to solidify the win.
Gavin Shellnut earned a spot on the all-tournament team with his best finish of the season, placing third with a final score of 213 (-3). He saved his best performance of the tournament for today, as he posted a 70 in the last round.
“It was good to get two members on the all-tournament team,” Carpenter said. “Hunter played well all tournament and Gavin consistently improved his scores each day to finish with his best tournament of the season. I am proud of both of them.”
Jack Story provided UT Martin with its third top-10 finisher in the tournament, as he shot a 76 today to finish with a 219 (+3). Austin Swafford (74 today) and Tyler Guy (76 today) concluded the team scoring with final tallies of 223 (+7) and 226 (+10), respectively.
The Skyhawk duo of Cameron Smith and Zach Haynes also finished out solid performances as individuals. Smith accounted for a 74 to finish at 222 (+6) while Haynes was responsible for a 78 on his way to a 225 (+9).
UT Martin will have an off week before resuming its fall schedule on Oct. 16-18 at the F&M Bank Championship, hosted by Austin Peay.
