MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rifle teams competed in the Tiger Open this past weekend in Memphis. Both the mixed squad and the women’s team made the trip.
The mixed squad earned a fourth place finish behind the program’s best air rifle score (2307) since the spring of 2015. Joe Martin (586) and Brigitte Curcio (580) led the Skyhawks while Alex Tamboli recorded a new career high of 568. It was Martin’s second highest total of his career in the air rifle discipline.
The women’s team also excelled in the air rifle finishing with their best team score (2288) since 2014. Ashley Coots (577) and Jennifer Plocinik (572) each set a new career high. Brianna Sawyers was second best for the women’s team with a 575.
However, UT Martin struggled to gain any momentum during the smallbore portion of the contest. Martin (581) and Kaitlin Korinek (564) were the two leaders for the mixed team in the discipline, while Sawyers (566) and Coots (555) paced the women’s squad.
“So far this season we have shot really well with either the smallbore or the air rifle, while shooting mediocre with the other,” said head coach Bob Beard. “We haven’t been able to put good scores together with both in the same day.”
Both the mixed team and the women’s team return to competition this Sunday, Oct. 9 as they travel to Oxford, Miss. to compete in the Ole Miss Open.
