SWAFFORD EARNS RUNNER-UP HONORS AS UTM FINISHES FIFTH AT DEREK DOLENC INVITATIONAL

MADISON, Ill. – Austin Swafford took home second place honors to help the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team climb two spots in the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational, played at Gateway National Links.
The Skyhawks shot a 298 (+14) as a team today, clinching a fifth-place finish (887, +35) in the field of 15 teams. Missouri State claimed team championship accolades after shooting a 875 (+23) through 54 holes.
“It was another difficult day as the wind was rough again,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Overall, I thought it was a good effort and we competed well. I was proud of the way that Austin and Hunter finished – they both were solid throughout the tournament.”
Swafford was responsible for another good round of golf today, compiling two birdies and 14 pars for a 72 (+1). The senior from Lebanon, Tenn. rounded out the tournament with a 211 (-2), trailing only Missouri State’s Jack Knoesel (206, -7) in the field of 87 golfers.
Hunter Richardson put the finishing touches on another successful tournament with a 73 today, birdieing four of his last seven holes. He tied for eighth place with a three-round total of 217 (+4), chalking up the 14th top-10 finish of his career.
Gavin Shellnut accounted for his best score of the tournament (74) today, finishing with an overall score of 229 (+16). Tyler Guy shot an 80 this morning on his way to a final round score of 233 (+20) while Zach Haynes’ 79 in the final round led to a final tally of 234 (+21).
UT Martin returns to action this weekend when it hosts its annual Skyhawk Fall Classic at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn. Teams from 11 different universities will compete in the tournament, which will take place on Oct. 2-4.
