September 26, 2016
MADISON, Ill. – Senior Austin Swafford guided the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team today during its first two rounds of the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational, which was played at the Gateway National Golf Links.
Swafford carded an even-par 71 in the first round before posting a 68 in the second round, which was the best score in the field of 87 golfers. His 139 (-3) ranks third after two rounds, which is five strokes off Missouri State’s Jack Knoesel for the individual lead.
As a team, the Skyhawks rank seventh out of 15 teams with a two-round total of 589 (+21). UT Martin shot a 298 (+14) in the morning round before trimming seven strokes off its score with a 291 (+7) this afternoon. Missouri State (580, +12) leads the field after 36 holes.
Swafford had four of his seven birdies in the second round, as he accounted for just one bogey and 13 pars this afternoon. Also carding seven birdies today was Hunter Richardson, who shot a 144 (75, 69) thanks to five birdies in the second round.
Tyler Guy (153, +11) shot a 75 this morning before following with a 78 in the second round. Zach Haynes (77, 78) and Gavin Shellnut (79, 76) also chipped in with scores of 155 today.
A pair of Skyhawks also accounted for strong rounds as individuals today. Jack Story racked up a tournament-best 10 birdies on his way to a 147 (71, 76) while Ross Redmont parlayed six birdies into a two-round score of 150 (80, 70).
“The course played tough today,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “It was windy and it wasn’t easy by any means but it was a very, very poor performance by our golf team. Austin and Hunter really played well but I am severely disappointed by our production. We will have to step it up tomorrow.”
The Skyhawks are paired up with New Orleans and Northern Iowa for the third round on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The final round will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
