September 24, 2016
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team fell in three sets this afternoon to Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay (21-25, 21-25, 16-25) at the Winfield Dunn Center.
Jamie Scherb corralled a match-best 12 digs to guide the Skyhawks (4-13, 0-2 OVC) defensively. Macy Reigelsperger led UT Martin in kills (seven) for the second straight match while Kelly Lean handed out 25 assists.
After Austin Peay (11-6, 2-0 OVC) scored the first point of the match, the Skyhawks unreeled five unanswered points to establish early momentum. The Governors evened the set at 6-all but Reigelsperger accounted for a kill and a service ace on back-to-back points to tilt the advantage back in favor of UT Martin. The Skyhawks stretched their lead out to three points (14-11) but Austin Peay followed with a 10-2 run. UT Martin came right back with four unanswered points to make the score 21-20 but the Governors wrapped up the set on a 4-1 spurt.
Lean (nine assists) and Scherb (five digs) paced the Skyhawks in the opening set as UT Martin hit .323 as a team.
UT Martin found itself in a 3-0 hole to begin the second set but the Skyhawks battled back to cut their deficit to 7-6. However, Austin Peay responded with seven unanswered points until Jemima Idemudia tallied a kill to halt the Governor run. UT Martin eventually closed its gap to three points at 20-17 but the Skyhawks could not overcome their early deficit.
Three Austin Peay attack errors aided UT Martin to a 5-3 advantage to start off the third set. Following a kill by Reigelsperger, the Governors went on a 6-0 run to go on top by a 12-6 margin. An Alisha Erves kill helped the Skyhawks narrow their deficit but Austin Peay soon laid claim to a 19-10 lead and UT Martin would not get any closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Lean assisted on 10 of UT Martin’s 11 kills in the closing set.
The Skyhawks return home for the first time in nearly a month when they open a three-match homestand next weekend. UT Martin plays host to SIUE on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. while hosting Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.
