REIGELSPERGER PACES UTM VOLLEYBALL IN THREE-SET LOSS AT MURRAY STATE
September 23, 2016
MURRAY, Ky. – Macy Reigelsperger established new career-highs with 15 kills and a .393 attack percentage tonight but the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team fell by a 3-0 margin (15-25, 21-25, 27-29) in its Ohio Valley Conference opener at Murray State.
A junior out of Coldwater, Ohio, Reigelsperger also tied a team-high with six digs for the Skyhawks (4-12, 0-1 OVC). Kelly Lean accumulated 33 assists and directed an offense that hit .255 overall but the host Racers managed to hit .415 in the match.
Four different Skyhawks (Hayley Gray, Jemima Idemudia, Jamie Scherb and Reigelsperger) each accounted for points to help UT Martin take a 4-3 lead in the opening set. Moments later, Murray State went on a 5-0 run to take a four-point advantage but a Hannah Phillips kill spurred a 4-1 Skyhawk run. The Racers followed with five of the next six points but a kill by Lean kept UT Martin within three points at 15-12. However, Murray State ended the set on a 10-3 run.
The Racers began the second set on a 5-2 run but Idemudia was responsible for an assisted block and a kill to help the Skyhawks pull within a single point at 7-6. Reigelsperger caught fire midway through the set, slamming down a trio of kills to keep UT Martin close at 15-14. Murray State would take a 20-16 advantage but another Reigelsperger kill and a bad Racer set cut the Skyhawk deficit to two points. UT Martin stayed within two points (23-21) but Murray State scored back-to-back points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Reigelsperger had five of the Skyhawks’ 10 kills in the second set.
UT Martin put itself in position to win the third set on three different occasions, but each set point proved to be unsuccessful before the Racers closed out the match. Murray State started off the third set with three unanswered points but a Racer attack error evened the score at 9-all. Two more ties followed before a Phillips kill capped off a 3-0 run to provide the Skyhawks with their first lead of the set at 14-13. Both sides then swapped leads until a 6-2 Murray State run gave the Racers a 23-20 advantage. Reigelsperger and Idemudia followed with five combined kills to lift UT Martin to a 25-24 lead but the Racers responded to tie the set. An Idemudia kill (26-25) and a Murray State service error (27-26) gave the Skyhawks two more opportunities but they couldn’t cash in, as the Racers ultimately scored the final three points of the set.
Reigelsperger (seven kills) and Lean (17 assists) helped UT Martin hit .412 with only four attack errors in the third and final set.
The Skyhawks will look to even their OVC mark on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they take on Austin Peay on the road. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
