BASEBALL ADDS JASON STOWERS AS ASSISTANT COACH
September 21, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – Head coach Rick Robinson and the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball program announced the addition of Jason Stowers to the Skyhawk coaching staff this past week.
At UT Martin, Stowers primary responsibilities will be to instruct outfielders and to work alongside assistant coach Rick Guarno with the offense. He will also serve as the first base coach during games.
“I am very grateful and excited to join the UT Martin coaching staff and community,” Stowers said. “I joined the staff because I believe in what Coach Robinson and Coach Guarno are doing here. I think the program is making huge strides each day and I hope to continue that. I really like the area and community and I am looking forward to being a Skyhawk.”
A native of Bristol, Tenn., Stowers brings 13 years of coaching experience to the program. His most recent stop was at the University of Pikeville, where he served as the assistant head coach, pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bears. During the 2016 season, Stowers helped lead the Bears to the largest conference turnaround in all of NAIA baseball. Under his tutelage, the Bears had their first All Mid-South Conference pitcher since 2006.
Prior to his time at Pikeville, Stowers was the head coach at his alma mater Alice Lloyd College, located in Pippa Passes, Ky., from 2012-2014. He led the Eagles to a 24-20 mark in his first season at the helm. It was the program’s first winning season in 10 years.
Stowers also brings a strong background in the collegiate summer leagues to the Skyhawks. Having spent last year serving as the hitting coach and 2013-2015 as the pitching coach with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League, Stowers has coached 71 players that have been drafted to Major League Baseball. Five of Stowers’ former players were taken in the first round including Kyle Freeland (8th overall, Colorado Rockies, 2014), Jeff Hoffman (9th overall, Toronto Blue Jays, 2014), Dakota Hudson (34th overall, St. Louis Cardinals, 2016) and Travis Jankowski (44th overall, San Diego Padres, 2012).
Robinson says that Stowers experience coaching successful players will be invaluable to the UT Martin program.
“I’m very excited that we are able to attract a veteran coach with lots of experience coaching elite athletes like those in the Cape Cod League.” Robinson said. “Coach Stowers has been an integral part of turning programs into winners and I am anticipating that he will experience the same success here.”
