MARTIN, Tenn. – In the first year of his second stint as head coach for the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle program, Bob Beard and the Skyhawks open their 2016-2017 fall schedule this weekend when they travel to Murray State this Sunday, Sept. 25.
The 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year brings back nine shooters, including second team all-OVC selection Joe Martin. Martin fired a career best 583 in the air rifle last season at the Withrow Invitational, while junior Brianna Sawyers (579) and senior Alyson Sylvester (571) both notched career highs in the OVC Championship tournament hosted by Murray State.
The Skyhawks open up the season ranked 19th in the nation in the 2016 Preseason College Rifle Coaches Association Poll, finishing last year’s season with a mixed aggregate total of 4665 in the OVC tournament, while the women’s team also fired an air rifle score of 2278.
The schedule will be a challenging one to navigate for the Skyhawks as they travel to places such as Mississippi, Memphis, Murray State, North Georgia, and Jacksonville State. The squad will host their annual UTM Rifle Open Jan. 17-22.
The season kicks off this weekend when four Skyhawks make their debut. Erin Bell, Kaitlin Korinek, Jennifer Plocinik and Amanda Mayo all will open their UT Martin careers against the second ranked Racers. The Skyhawks are scheduled to being shooting at 9 a.m.
