SKYHAWK BASEBALL SET TO OPEN UP FALL PRACTICE TODAY
September 19, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off a season where the program posted its most wins since 2011, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team begins its fall practice schedule today under third-year head coach Rick Robinson.
UT Martin continued to grow as a program during the 2016 season, concluding the year with 19 victories and nine Ohio Valley Conference wins. The nine OVC victories were just one shy of the program’s all-time record, as the Skyhawks won the league series against Murray State, SIUE and Eastern Illinois.
Robinson, who owns a 735-351 career record, returns seven position players and eight pitchers from last year’s squad. Ryan Helgren (.321 batting average, 11 extra-base hits) leads three returning starters while Alex Evans (eight wins, 67 strikeouts) heads the returners on the pitching staff.
A total of 18 newcomers (nine pitchers, nine position players) are also expected to make an impact right away. Eleven of the Skyhawk newcomers are junior college transfers while seven freshmen will make their collegiate debuts for UT Martin in 2017.
The team will hold 11 intersquad scrimmages this fall beginning this Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. Tentative times and dates for the scrimmages are set for Sept. 29 (7 p.m.), Oct. 1 (TBD), Oct. 6 (7 p.m.), Oct. 8 (TBD), Oct. 13 (7 p.m.), Oct. 15 (TBD), Oct. 20 (7 p.m.), Oct. 22 (TBD), Oct. 27 (7 p.m.) and Oct. 29 (TBD).
