HAYNES PACES UTM ON FINAL DAY AS SKYHAWKS FINISH SEVENTH AT EKU INTERCOLLEGIATE
September 18, 2016
RICHMOND, Ky. – Junior Zach Haynes carded a career-low 70 this morning as the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team dodged the rain in the final round of the EKU Intercollegiate, held at the University Club at Arlington.
After waiting out a two-hour weather delay, Haynes produced the best round of his collegiate career. The Smyrna, Tenn. native was responsible for two birdies and also tallied an eagle on the par-5, 506-yard Hole No. 2. In addition to his career-low score, Haynes’ 25th place finish (214, +4) was the best of his career.
As a team, UT Martin shot a 288 today to finish with a score of 857 (+17), placing seventh out of 18 teams. The Skyhawks ranked second out of seven Ohio Valley Conference teams in the field, trailing only host Eastern Kentucky (828, -12) – who won the tournament by 14 strokes.
“We would like to have finished better but there were a lot of good teams in this tournament,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We didn’t play badly but we didn’t make enough birdies today to cover up our mistakes. One positive sign that we will take away from this tournament is that everybody throughout the lineup contributed.”
Hunter Richardson picked up a pair of birdies on his way to a 71 today, finishing the tournament in 18th place with a 213 (+3). Tyler Guy accounted for a team-high three birdies this morning, carding a 76 to complete the tournament with a score of 216 (+6). Gavin Shellnut (73 today) and Austin Swafford (74 today) each posted final scores of 219 (+9) for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin returns to action next week when it travels to Normal, Ill. for the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational on Sept. 25-27.
