NASHVILLE, Tenn. – One of the Ohio Valley Conference’s top up and coming squads, the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s and women’s cross country squads ran into some tough weather on Saturday at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt at Percy Warner Park.
Despite battling more than an hour delay due to lightning and facing some of the region’s top ranked squads, the Skyhawks competed throughout the morning. While the delay caused some slower times by throughout the field, the Skyhawks outmatched several conference foes in the team’s second race of the year.
On the men’s side, the Skyhawks were led once again by freshman Edwin Kurgat who entered the race fresh off a title at the Tennessee Dual just two weeks ago. Kurgat continued to make an early impression, posting a 16th place finish while completing just nine seconds off the school record of 25:10 in the men’s 8k.
Joining in the action was the performances of freshmen Ryan Ford and Austin Rogers. Competing in their first collegiate 8ks, Ford finished with a time of 25:55.4 while Rogers crossed at 26:24.
Continuing with a common trend throughout her career, senior Ann Asipan was a standout performer for the Skyhawks once again. Asipan also tallied medalist honors at the Tennessee Dual two weeks ago while leading the squad once again with a time of 17:49.8 to post a top-30 finish out of a 261-athlete field.
Freshman Kara Martin finished in second for the Skyhawks in the women’s 5k with a time of 18:40.9. Not far behind was sophomore Cherie Wilson with a time of 18:58 for third. Joining in the action was junior Amelia Martin who ranked fourth on the team with a finish of 19:06.1.
