September 13, 2016
MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team shot under-par for the third consecutive round at the Murray State Invitational, bringing home second-place honors out of 10 teams who competed in the event.
The Skyhawks finished the season-opening tournament with a final score of 844 (-8), four shots behind tournament champion Southern Illinois. UT Martin shot a 282 (-2) this morning in the third and final round.
“We played really well today but Southern Illinois just played a bit better,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “This was the best we have ever played as a team in this particular golf tournament. We had three of our top-five shoot under par for the tournament and I will take that every time. We have some things we need to work on but overall, it was a good start to our season.”
Austin Swafford capped off his strong tournament with a 70 today, finishing second out of 63 golfers with an overall score of 207 (-6). The second-place finish was the best of Swafford's collegiate career. Hunter Richardson carded an even-par 71 today to bring his three-round total to 210 (-3), which was good enough for sixth place.
Tyler Guy compiled a final score of 211 (-2) after shooting a 68 this morning, a round which included an eagle. Gavin Shellnut compiled a 73 today to finish the tournament with a 216 (+3) while Zach Haynes (232 overall, 76 today) rounded out the team scoring for UT Martin.
Individually, Ross Redmont had an eagle to his credit on his way to carding the lowest round in the field today with a 66 (-5), finishing with a 217 (+4) for the tournament. Jack Story also completed the tournament with a 217 (+4) after shooting a 76 in today’s final round while Cameron Smith (228 overall, 82 today) also competed as an individual for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin has a quick turnaround before its next tournament, as it will travel to Richmond, Ky. to take part in the EKU Intercollegiate on Sept. 17-18.
