September 12, 2016
MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin accounts for the individual and team lead after the first 36 holes of the Murray State Invitational, held at Miller Memorial Golf Course today.
The Skyhawks were one of two teams to shoot under par today, as UT Martin (562, -6) holds a two-shot advantage over Southern Illinois. UT Martin compiled a 282 (-2) in the morning before shaving off two strokes for a 280 (-4) this afternoon.
Senior Austin Swafford is a co-leader in the field of 63 golfers representing 10 different universities. The Lebanon, Tenn. native shot a 137 (-5), steadily compiling a 69 in the first round and a 68 in the second round. He leads the tournament in par-4 scoring (-6) and was responsible for 11 birdies. Hunter Richardson followed closely behind with a 139 (-3), tying for fourth place with rounds of 71 and 68 today.
Gavin Shellnut (72, 71) and Tyler Guy (70, 73; event-best 29 pars) each carded a 143 (+1) today while Zach Haynes shot back-to-back 78’s (+14) to round out UT Martin’s team scoring.
Individually, Jack Story (69, 72) shot 1-under par in his collegiate debut – including an eagle on the par-4 No. 3 hole – to sit in 10th place. Cameron Smith (70, 76; +4) ranks second in the tournament field in par-3 scoring (-2) while Ross Redmont (79, 72; +9) also competed as individuals for the Skyhawks.
“We are an experienced team but you never know what to expect when it comes to the first tournament,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “I thought our guys handled it very well and did a nice job all day. I expect another good round tomorrow – we can play a few shots better and we have a chance to finish what we started.”
UT Martin will look to secure its first tournament win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 13, as the third and final round of the tournament begins with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
