SKYHAWKS HOST EVANSVILLE IN MID-WEEK SHOWDOWN
September 12, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team is looking to build a winning streak and gain some momentum as we get closer to conference play. The Ohio Valley Conference schedule is set to begin next week.
The next step in that process for the Skyhawks (2-4) will be a victory over the Evansville Purple Aces tomorrow night. Thus far in 2016, UT Martin has been unable to string together wins. A trend they are hoping to buck this week with back to back home matches to end the non-conference slate. Historically, the Skyhawks have been able to best the Purple Aces in Martin. UT Martin holds a 3-2-1 all-time series lead against Evansville on the pitch, with a perfect 2-0 record at home.
The Skyhawk coaching staff has been hoping for a more balanced approach when it comes to scoring goals and that is exactly what they got Friday night at Chattanooga. The forward line was led by senior Saphyra Coombs-James who was able to take a pass from Maggie Burkett and find the back of the net in the third minute of the game. Current OVC Defensive Player of the Week nominee Amy McGivern was also able to net a goal for the defending line. Her free kick from 25 yards out was one of the top goals on the year as she was able to clear the wall of defenders and bend it in the top right corner of the net. After the Skyhawks surrendered a 2-0 lead, redshirt freshman Sophia Sharos came through for the midfielders with her first goal of the season on a header in the 86th minute to give UT Martin the 3-2 victory.
The Skyhawks are hoping to continue their offensive production against Evansville (1-6-1). The Purple Aces will not be an easy out though as they are led by one of the top players in the Missouri Valley Conference in Bronwyn Boswell. The senior out of Frisco, Tex. has notched five goals and 11 points in just eight games played this season. In the 2015 contest between the two squads, Boswell was able to force a turnover in the second minute of play and feed an Evansville forward who quickly made the score 1-0. The Skyhawks fell behind 2-0 before scoring three times in the second half including goals by McGivern and Coombs-James earning UT Martin the 3-2 win.
The Skyhawks will host Evansville Tuesday, Sept. 13 at Skyhawk field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available by following the link at the top of the page.
