UT MARTIN TENNIS OPENS FALL SEASON WITH SUCCESSFUL SKYHAWK INVITATIONAL

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team kicked off its 2016 fall season this weekend when it hosted the four-team Skyhawk Invitational on campus.

Pitted against Austin Peay, Southeast Missouri and Alabama-Huntsville, the Skyhawks compiled a 6-1 record in doubles and a 13-7 mark in singles over the span of the tournament.

UT Martin opened Friday with a narrow singles loss to Austin Peay. Burcu Tari managed a come-from-behind tiebreaker win at No. 3 with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) triumph while Asel Jumamukhambetova eased through a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5.

The Skyhawks followed with a convincing doubles win against Southeast Missouri, securing three of the four team points. Sarah Candeloro and Andrea Plantada Cortes teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 while Jumamukhambetova/Jemima Potter and Elina Geut/Olha Burak each picked up 8-3 wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

Friday’s action concluded with a sweep of Alabama-Huntsville in doubles. The tandem of Candeloro/Plantada-Cortes wrapped up an 8-7 (7-3) win at No. 1 while Hitomi Naito/Tari (No. 2) and Jumamukhambetova/Potter (No. 3) each made short work of their opponents with 8-1 wins.

UT Martin began Saturday by claiming six of the seven singles points against Alabama-Huntsville. Candeloro won by a 6-2, 6-3 margin at No. 1 while Jumamukhambetova earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 2. Plantada-Cortes tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 while Tari breezed through a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Geut (6-1, 6-4) won at No. 5 while Burak came through with a gutsy 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9) victory at No. 7.

The Skyhawks dialed up another singles win against southeast Missouri, accumulating a 5-2 advantage. At No. 1, Candeloro earned a 6-3, 6-3 win while Naito claimed a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Tari (6-2, 7-5) won at No. 3 while Jumamukhambetova (6-1, 6-3) earned a win at No. 5. Geut then put the finishing touches on the win with a gritty 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) triumph at No. 6.

UT Martin’s fall season continues next weekend when it takes part in a tournament hosted by Austin Peay on Sept. 16-18.
