September 4, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team played host to UMKC this afternoon at Skyhawk Field. The Kangaroos were able to come out on top 2-0.
The match opened with both teams playing cautiously, and looking to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes. In the 8th minute, senior Saphyra Coombs-James was able to break through the UMKC defense and was looking to put the Skyhawks on top early. A diving save by the UMKC goalkeeper Erin Roth kept UT Martin off the board and kept the game scoreless.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maya Jamison made her third consecutive start for the Skyhawks and was tested by a flurry of Kangaroo shots midway through the opening period. In the 35th minute, UMKC was able to block a UT Martin shot and go on the counter attack. A dangerous cross by UMKC found its way to Sydni Young, who was able to collect it and finish it off to put the Kangaroos up 1-0.
The Skyhawks were looking to regroup after halftime and find the equalizer. Freshmen Bianca McFarland and Nicole Collins were both able to get shots on goal early in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.
A cross by UMKC in the 56th minute found its way into the Skyhawk box and was collected by Sammi Arch on the right side. She was able to barely beat a diving Jamison and give the Kangaroos a 2-0 lead.
UT Martin battled to the end with sophomore Kaci Mitchell and freshman Sophia Sharos each getting multiple attempts at the UMKC net. Ultimately, UT Martin was unable to solve Roth and fell 2-0. Mitchell led the Skyhawks with three shots, while Jamison notched nine saves in the losing effort.
UT Martin is back in action this Friday, Sept. 9, as the Skyhawks travel to Chattanooga to take on the Mocs. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The next home match will be Tuesday Sept. 13, when UT Martin welcomes Evansville to Skyhawk Field. The starting time is also scheduled for 6 p.m.
