UTM VOLLEYBALL OPENS 2016 HOME SLATE WITH TRI-MATCH ON MONDAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – After seven matches at away or neutral sites to begin the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team will serve as hosts for a tri-match at Skyhawk Fieldhouse on Monday, Sept. 5. The Skyhawks will take on Northern Arizona at 11 a.m. before Northern Arizona and Alabama A&M battle at 3 p.m. The day concludes with UT Martin squaring off against Alabama A&M at 7 p.m.

This will be the first time that the Skyhawks have ever faced Northern Arizona. Monday’s match will also mark the sixth consecutive year that UT Martin has played Alabama A&M, as the Skyhawks boast a 4-2 all-time record against the Lady Bulldogs.

UT Martin enters its home opener with a 2-5 mark on the young season, taking on stiff competition in its first two tournaments. Madison Wessling and Macy Reigelsperger have each brought home all-tournament honors in 2016, as Wessling paces the Skyhawks with 70 kills (3.04 per set). Reigelsperger has accounted for 54 kills, 52 digs, 10 blocks and a team-best 11 service aces, the third-highest total in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Kelly Lean’s 233 assists (10.13 per set) and Jemima Idemudia’s 30 blocks (1.30 per set) each rank second in the OVC. Defensively, Colleen Larson leads the way with 70 digs (3.04 per set) through the first seven matches of the season.

Northern Arizona has amassed a 3-2 record in 2016, one season after the Lumberjacks went 28-5 and won the Big Sky Conference championship. Lauren Jacobsen has racked up 91 kills (4.79 per set) on a .298 hitting percentage to power Northern Arizona offensively while also tying Jordan Anderson for the team lead in digs (72, 3.79 per set). Jensen Barton (185 assists, 9.74 per set) and Abby Akin (23 blocks, 1.21 per set) have also led the Lumberjacks so far this season.

Alabama A&M carries a 1-6 record into the tri-match after coming off an 8-19 mark in 2015. Ashundria McNeal (81 kills, 3.86 per set) has accounted for nearly 40 percent of the Lady Bulldogs’ kills on the season while also chipping in a team-high 17 blocks (0.81 per set). Riley Balsmeyer leads Alabama A&M with 111 assists (5.29 per set) and is also one of a trio of Lady Bulldogs with a team-high 30 digs on the year.
