MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team heads to Starkville, Miss. to take on Southeastern Conference opponent Mississippi State (1-1) this Sunday, Aug. 28.

The Skyhawks have dropped their only two previous meetings against the Bulldogs (2010, 2012) with both contests being decided by one goal. The 2012 match resulted in MSU narrowly edging out UT Martin 3-2, where then freshman Saphyra Coombs-James scored on a header from the right side in the 79th minute to tie the game. MSU was able to take back the lead just one minute later and hold on for the win.

UT Martin (0-2) is looking to rebound from opening weekend losses to Western Kentucky and UAB. The Skyhawks are led offensively by Coombs-James and sophomore Maggie Burkett, who each recorded their first goal on the year. Coombs-James’ successful penalty kick against UAB moved her alone into third place all-time at UT Martin in career goals (23). Freshman Nicole Collins racked up a team high six shots over the weekend.

Several contributors have made an impact offensively for MSU head coach Aaron Gordon thus far in 2016. Entering the weekend, MaKayla Waldner, Johanna Hamblett and Khalyn Harmon have each scored for the Bulldogs, as they look to improve on their 0.94 goals per game average from a year ago. Defensively, MSU is led by junior goalkeeper Tanya de Souza. The Paris, France native has a .889 save percentage, 16 saves and one clean sheet through two games.

The showdown between MSU and UT Martin is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and can be seen live on SEC Network Plus or by following the link above.
