August 18, 2016
MARTIN,Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin 2016 soccer season opens up at Skyhawk Field as the Skyhawks host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Friday, Aug. 19. Kickoff time is set for 7 p.m.
Senior Saphyra Coombs-James will lead the Skyhawks into 2016 as the lone upperclassman on the squad. She ranks in the top-10 in UT Martin history in goals, shots, assists and points. She also is tied for the most game-winning goals (8) in school history.
Coming off a 2015 campaign as the youngest team in the entire NCAA, the Skyhawks are looking for a little more consistency with their added experience. Newcomers Danae Kaldaridou and Nicole Collins look to boost the offense with their dynamic playmaking abilities.
Western Kentucky is coming into 2016 as one of the favorites to compete for the Conference USA championship. First team All-Conference USA selection Hannah Chua is back as WKU is looking to improve on their 8-6-5 record from a year ago. Senior forward Iris Dunn also returns for head coach Jason Neidell. The duo of Dunn and Chua led the Hilltoppers in 2015 with 11 points each.
The first ever meeting between the two schools took place in the opening game of the 2015 season, as Western Kentucky took down the Skyhawks 3-1. The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Chua, Dunn, and Hannah Cody. The Skyhawks responded with a flurry of shots in the second half, but only Coombs-James was able to find the mark with a goal off of a deflected shot in the 90th minute.
