MARTIN, Tenn. – An overcast morning transitioned into a rain soaked evening practice as the University of Tennessee at Martin football team reached the midpoint of the preseason with a pair of practices to jump start the team’s final week of camp before school starts.

The Skyhawks completed practices No. 11 and 12 leading up to the season opener at Cincinnati on Thursday, Sept. 1. on Monday. Outfitted in just practice tops and shorts for the morning segment, the Skyhawks came back in the evening in full pads while engaging in full contact once again.

“We had two practices but the guys had good energy and we got better today,” said UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson. “We are right where we need to be. This is the second week and you just try to get through Sunday and into a normal mode with school. We have 18 seniors, they are a good group and have provided good leadership so far. I thought they have approached practice really well.”

With a loaded day of practices and situations, the Skyhawks had to weather the elements over the final few periods of Monday evening’s action as rain washed over the playing surface. Despite the rain providing less than ideal practice conditions, the Skyhawks pressed on and added yet another wrinkle to the plan.

“It started raining on us during a flowing period and the quarterbacks and wide receivers still did a good job,” said Simpson. “We told the guys that you can’t control the elements on Saturdays so you have to learn to play through it. It was yet another teaching moment.”

UT Martin will conduct its second of four scrimmages on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks will participate in a total of eight practices this week – including a pair of scrimmages on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.
