UT MARTIN ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF MEN'S INDOOR AND OUTDOOR TRACK IN 2016-17
August 9, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin has announced the addition of men’s indoor and outdoor track beginning with the upcoming 2016-17 academic year. The programs will compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Ohio Valley Conference. Men’s and women’s cross country head coach Peter Dalton will assume coaching responsibilities along with previously announced women’s indoor and outdoor track squads.
“Over this summer we are excited about reintroducing four programs that have been a part of our history into the Skyhawk athletic family in men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track,” said UT Martin interim athletics director Kevin McMillan. “The addition of these two programs not only allows our department to grow, but enables us to recruit new student-athletes to our campus while offering a positive student-athlete experience and a valuable UT Martin degree.”
The addition of the two programs will enhance UT Martin cross country programs ability to offer talented men a comprehensive team experience at the conference, regional and national level.
“Providing opportunities for our current team members, along with talented recruits from the state of Tennessee and beyond, is exactly why men’s track has been added,” said Dalton. “The response on the recruiting trail - our commitment to academics and team-centered athletic advancement – made the decision to add men’s track an obvious one.”
UT Martin will now sponsor 19 NCAA athletic programs in addition to the NIRA sport of rodeo with the addition of men’s indoor and outdoor track. The 2016-17 season will mark the return of the two programs since they were discontinued from UT Martin’s athletic department following the 2003 season.
The indoor track season runs from December through March with the OVC Championships held Feb. 24-25. The outdoor season runs from March through June with the OVC Championships held May 11-13.
The focus of UT Martin’s men’s indoor and outdoor track squad will include the sprint, relays, mid-distance and distance events.
