SKYHAWK FOOTBALL OPENS 2016 FALL CAMP
August 5, 2016
MARTIN, Tenn. – Not even Mother Nature and her heavy amounts of rain and lightning could keep the University of Tennessee at Martin football team from the start of fall camp, serving as the official kick to the 2016 season.
After seeing the start of camp be delayed by over an hour due to lightning strikes throughout the northwest Tennessee area, the Skyhawks outlasted the weather system before conducting their first official practice of the preseason. With the loss of 24 seniors to graduation, the Skyhawks welcomed 38 newcomers to a camp roster which includes 95 players.
Donning just helmets for the camp opener, the Skyhawks spent the evening working on their craft for over two hours on the moist FieldTurf at Hardy Graham Stadium. Allowed just 24 practices leading up to game week preparations for the season-opener at Cincinnati on Thursday, Sept., the Skyhawks are ready to see how the team progresses. Just a few of the position battles to watch come at the quarterback and defensive back positions.
“I thought the guys had a great attitude and handled the rain delay well,” said UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson. “We had a lot of competition and focus – it was a good day. I am excited about what we have done in the weight room and the kids that we have recruited which is going to show up on both sides of the ball.”
UT Martin will return to the gridiron on Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7 to wrap up the weekend with 7 p.m. practices. The Skyhawks will begin a fresh week of practices on Monday, Aug. 8 which will feature seven practices spread over the ensuing six-day period before the squad’s first scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.
