MARTIN, Tenn. – Three-time defending Ohio Valley Conference champion University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will embark on a foreign exhibition tour to Costa Rica as part of the team’s preparation for the 2016-17 season.

The trip will see the Skyhawks depart on Sunday, July 24 for San Jose before returning on Monday, Aug. 1. UT Martin will play three international goodwill games along with spending time practicing, touring the country and providing community service.

The Skyhawks will play their first of three games on Monday, July 25 before lacing up the sneakers on Tuesday, July 26 for their second contest. Wednesday will see the Skyhawks travel to La Fortuna, highlighted by a trip to Arenal Volcano before spending three days at Playa Conchal. The Skyhawks will play their final contest of the tour on Sunday, July 31 before returning on Monday, Aug. 1.

“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan. “With such a young team which features just one senior and nine newcomers, we will look to take advantage of this opportunity as we focus on implementing our system and continued skill development. Most importantly, this trip will be a great experience for our players and we hope it will jump start the development of our team chemistry.”

The NCAA allows teams to take a foreign trip once every four years. UT Martin’s most recent international summer trip was to Canada in 2010.

Division I teams are also permitted 10 full summer practices in preparation for a foreign tour. The Skyhawks will remain on campus over the summer for their usual offseason workouts leading up to the trip. Official practice for the trip will begin on Sunday, July 10.

UT Martin returns two starters and four returners for the 2016-17 season, including All-OVC second team selection Jessy Ward and OVC All-Newcomer Myah Taylor. Sophomore guard Emanye Robertson and junior forward Shy Copney also return to the fold.

The Skyhawks welcome five new players to the program in signees Breanna Boggs, Lindsay Chrise, Ansley Eubank, Janekia Mason and Kendall Spray. The squad also welcomes transfers Emily Eubank (Lipscomb) and Teddy Vincent (High Point) to the fold after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. The duo of Ashton Feldhaus and Ta’Naisha Hill are also slated to return to the court after earning medical redshirts last season.
