SKYHAWK BASEBALL NAMED RECIPIENT OF OVC TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
June 14, 2016
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that the University of Tennessee at Martin earned the 2016 Team Sportsmanship Award for the sport of baseball.
This marks the second time in program history that the Skyhawks have earned the OVC Team Sportsmanship Award, which was established before the 2005-06 academic year. UT Martin also won the award in 2010-11.
"I am excited about winning the OVC Team Sportsmanship Award," Skyhawk head coach Rick Robinson said. "It says to me that our players and coaches play the game the right way, win or lose."
UT Martin is coming off its most victories (19) since 2011 while its 18 OVC wins over the last two seasons are tied for the most in a two-year span in program history. The 2016 Skyhawks set new single-season program records for walks drawn (231) and pitching strikeouts (369) while posting the fourth-highest fielding percentage (.962) in school history.
Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of their respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas of evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff, administrators and fans.
