SKYHAWKS ADD TWO MEN'S DISTANCE RUNNERS TO 2016 SIGNING CLASS

MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin cross country coach Peter Dalton has announced the addition of two men’s distance runners to the squad’s 2016 signing class with Malick Gemechu and Austin Rogers signing their respective National Letters of Intent.
“Both Malick and Austin are very talented young men” commented Dalton. “More importantly, both men know how to work hard and are ready to make the commitment to be great.”
Malick Gemechu, Fr., Johnson City, Tenn. (Science Hill HS)
A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Gemechu joins the Skyhawks from Science Hill High School. Named the 2014-15 Most Improved Runner of the Year, Gemechu set four different personal records during his senior campaign in the 800m, 1200m, 1600m, highlighted by his two-mile run of 9:38. A 2016 Tennessee state high school indoor track and field championships qualifier in the 1600m, 3200m and distance medley relay, Gemechu is an emerging talent that has a bright future.
Austin Rogers, Fr., Las Vegas, Nev. (Green Valley HS)
Hailing from Las Vegas, Nev., Rogers joins the Skyhawks from Green Valley High School where he ranked as one of the top competitors in the southwest. Rogers was a six-time first team all-state recipient in the sports of cross country and track highlighted by his 9:25 personal record in the two-mile. He earned runner-up medalist honors at the Nevada State Championships in both cross country and track in 2014 and 2015. Rogers won the Southeast League Championship with a record-setting time of 15:45 for 5,000 meters.
The pair joins early signees Ryan Ford (Huntsville, Ala.), Joey Palumbo (Somerset, Ohio) and Marcos Macias (Mayfield, Ky.) to complete the team’s 2016 signing class.
