CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A pair of University of Tennessee at Martin distance runners competed at the Joey Haines Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri over the weekend, posting strong performances.
With the Skyhawks only competing in the men’s and women’s 10k events, junior Joey DeSantis and sophomore Amelia Martin once again turned in impressive events in their fourth meet of the track schedule.
DeSantis, a native of Frisco, Texas, competed in the 10k for the second time this season, posting one of the fastest times in school history while winning the event with a first place time of 31:51.8.
“Joey’s hard work and experience showed once again,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “He has not only learned how to race, but how to win.”
Martin, a native of Blackburg, SC, continued her climb atop the school record book, eclipsing her previous school record by over 13 seconds. Posting a time of 38:37.4 in the women’s 10k, Martin owns the two fastest times in school history in her debut season for the Skyhawks.
“Amelia is showing all of the hard work she has done all winter,” said Dalton. “She lowered the school record for the second straight meet. Every time she goes out, she runs faster.”
The Skyhawks will return to the track next weekend with a pair of split meets. The men’s squad will travel to the Auburn Tiger Invitational while the women’s squad will travel north to the Hilltopper Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky.
