CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell behind early and could not recover in a 10-2 loss at Austin Peay in Ohio Valley Conference action at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Drew Erie tied a career-high with three hits to lead the Skyhawk offense this evening while Nico Zych, Chase Young and Max Balter also had two-hit nights. Zack Malone provided the only offense for UT Martin, driving a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning for his third longball of the season.

UT Martin starter Dalton Potts (1-8) received the loss after allowing eight runs in five innings. Alex Boshers (two runs, four strikeouts in two innings) and Chris Flores (three strikeouts in a perfect eighth inning) also made appearances for the Skyhawks (9-37, 5-21 OVC).

Two of the first three Skyhawk batters singled in the first inning but UT Martin could not manage a run. Austin Peay then scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The Skyhawks managed four hits in the top of the second but once again could not push across a run. Austin Peay then tacked on another run in the bottom of the second to make the score 5-0.

Potts would retire seven straight batters at one point, retiring the side in the third and pitching around a two-out error in the fourth.

UT Martin would get two baserunners aboard with just one out in the fifth but could not get on the scoreboard.

Austin Peay added three runs in the fifth but Boshers would hold the Governors scoreless in the sixth.

Meanwhile, the Skyhawk offense would get at least two men aboard the basepaths in both the sixth and seventh innings but could not break through for a run.

After Austin Peay tallied a pair of two-out runs in the seventh, Malone broke up the shutout in the eighth. After Sorensen grinded out a seven-pitch walk, Malone jumped on a 3-1 pitch that cleared the left field wall to make the score 10-2.

Flores then struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth but the Skyhawks could not manage a baserunner in the top of the ninth.

The series will be on the line on Monday, May 12 when the finale takes place at noon.
