MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team continues to personify the definition of a student-athlete as freshman Burcu Tari was recently honored with the Excellence in Engineering Scholarship by the engineering department on campus. The scholarship is given to students who excel in the classroom and also exhibit great potential to be an engineer.
A freshman hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, Tari was outstanding on the season, posting a 16-3 mark in singles along with an 11-7 record in doubles play. She posted an 8-2 record in conference singles play while going 5-3 in doubles, pairing with Jessica Silva and Naito. She finished the season on a seven match winning streak.
The Skyhawks have a storied history of being amongst the best teams in the conference in the classroom. This year the Skyhawks placed all eight players on the university’s Dean’s List while four players maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average. As a team the Skyhawks tallied a 3.8 GPA while seniors Katie McCall and Ivon Simic each graduated this past weekend.
In 2012-13 the Skyhawks had five players earn the Ohio Valley Conference’s Medal of Honor, an honor bestowed to athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Along with the Medal of Honor recipients, seven Skyhawks were named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
