MARTIN, Tenn. – Arkeem Joseph, a 6-9, 280-pound center out of Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball program. Joseph will have two years of eligibility for the Skyhawks starting with the 2014-15 season.

“I am excited about adding Arkeem to this recruiting class,” UT Martin first-year head coach Heath Schroyer said. “He’s a big, physical post player that will be a huge presence for us. He is very skilled around the basket and can score with either hand. Arkeem is only 19 years old so as he continues to develop and get in great shape, his best basketball is ahead of him.”

Joseph received all-region first team honors after helping lead the Mustangs to 23-7 record last year under head coach Jeff Brustad. In 27 games played last season, Joseph averaged 8.3 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 56.2 percent (91-for-162) in just 15.8 minutes per game. He tallied a season-high 24 points twice in the span of three games late in the season, including a remarkable 11-for-11 effort from the field against Prestige Prep on Feb. 7. He also poured in 24 points at the Globe Institute of Technology on Feb. 15.

Joseph was one of New York’s best prep players under the guidance of head coach John Templeton at the Brooklyn School for Global Studies. Joseph averaged 17.9 points and 13.9 rebounds a game during his senior season while guiding the Jaguars to a Brooklyn A West championship and appearance in the PSAL Class A playoffs.

Identified as a Hoop Group New York Top 100 senior, Joseph was known for his big games. He tallied 22 points and 21 rebounds against Abraham Lincoln on Feb. 7, 2012 while adding 23 points and 16 rebounds against Banneker. In a playoff victory, he poured in 16 points while snaring 20 rebounds against Environmental Studies. After the season, he had an impressive showing in the 2012 NYC Mayor’s Cup All-Star Game, scoring 12 points against some of the best seniors in the state.

“I chose UT Martin because I thought it was the best option for me to get better and excel,” Joseph said. “When I visited, I had a good feel for the campus and the athletic department as a whole. I want to come in and help us win an Ohio Valley Conference championship.”

Joseph joins Twymond Howard (Pearl, Miss./Southwest Mississippi CC), Alex Anderson (Memphis, Tenn./Itawamba CC), CJ Davis (Cave Creek, Ariz./Westwind Prep Academy), Brandon Hitchman (Stratford, England/Westwind Prep Academy), Fatodd Lewis (Memphis, Tenn./Raleigh-Egypt HS) and Richard Lee (Lake Worth, Fla./Northeast HS) in Schroyer’s inaugural signing class at UT Martin.
