BASEBALL TEAM WRAPS UP FOUR-GAME ROAD TRIP WITH SERIES AT OVC RIVAL MOREHEAD STATE
April 16, 2014
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad makes the near-400 mile trek to Morehead State for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference set this weekend. First pitch times for the series are set for 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 17; 4 p.m. on Friday, April 18 and 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19.
The Skyhawks (4-30, 3-15 OVC) will look to take advantage of the cozy confines of Allen Field during this series. In 21 games spanning over the last seven road series’ at Morehead State since 2000, UT Martin has averaged 8.8 runs per game, including scoring 36 total runs in 2010 - the last time the Skyhawks won a series in Morehead (two games to one).
After struggling offensively for the majority of the year, the UT Martin lineup has shown signs of life over the last three games. In that span, the Skyhawks are hitting .355 while averaging nine runs per contest. Taylor Cox (.600), Taylor Douglas (.583), Nick Molina (.545, seven runs scored) and Chase Young (seven RBI’s) have all enjoyed offensive surges during that stretch.
A trio of juniors are slated to start on the mound in this series. The southpaw Cox (0-8, 8.54 ERA) will get the starting nod in Game 1, followed by left-hander Dalton Potts (0-6, 9.54) in Game 2. Righty Alex Martin (0-6, 4.06) is expected to start the series finale on Saturday.
Morehead State (18-18, 7-8 OVC) is coming off an impressive week, as the Eagles defeated a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on the road (6-4 win over No. 12 Kentucky on April 8, 8-7 win over No. 23 Indiana on April 13).
Junior outfielder Brandon Rawe (.416 batting average) paces four Eagles who hit .300 or better. Rawe enters this series as the OVC hits leader (64) while also slamming a league-best 15 doubles.
Morehead State’s listed probable starting pitchers are freshman righty Luke Humphreys (2-2, 7.29 ERA) on Thursday, sophomore right-hander Matt Anderson (1-5, 5.67) on Friday and redshirt sophomore righty Willie Sligh (0-3, 9.82) on Saturday. They will look to hand a lead over to an Eagle bullpen that features closer Craig Pearcy, who leads the OVC in opponent batting average (.216).
All three games of this series will be streamed live, free of charge on the OVC Digital Network. Those links - as well as a link for live stats - are available at the top of the webpage.
