SKYHAWK TENNIS NARROWLY FALLS IN FINAL ROAD MATCH AT SIU EDWARDSVILLE 4-3

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s tennis team battled hard but ultimately fell in its final road contest of the regular season at Ohio Valley Conference foe SIU Edwardsville 4-3.

The Skyhawks (6-9, 3-4 OVC) got off to a quick start by winning the doubles points. No. 1 duo of Ivon Simic and Sarah Candeloro got the day started with a decisive 8-2 victory before SIUE evened doubles play with a victory at No. 3. The undefeated duo of freshmen Hitomi Naito and Burcu Tari would seal the doubles point with an 8-6 match victory.

Naito continued her hot play in singles, opening play with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 match victory at No. 2. SIUE would look to bounce back by winning its next two singles matches at both No. 5 and 1 before Tari righted the ship with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 4.

The Cougars would ultimately pick up the victory after facing a 3-2 deficit going into the final two matches. SIUE would rally by picking up consecutive victories at both No. 3 and 6 for the 4-3 match victory.

UT Martin will look to close out the regular season portion of the 2014 schedule this week. The Skyhawks will attempt to complete a previous match against Belmont before winding up the season against Austin Peay and Murray State over the weekend.
