BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team was chosen to finish fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference race in 2014, as the results of the coach’s poll were released by the league office this morning.
The OVC’s head coaches took part in the voting. The Skyhawks tallied 66 points in the poll, 30 points behind first place Austin Peay, who received eight of the 11 first-place votes.
The Skyhawks are coming off a successful fall season, carding top-five finishes in four of their five tournaments. UT Martin captured first place honors in the Wasioto Winds Fall Kickoff Invitational on Sept. 8. The Skyhawks led the OVC in lowest scoring average (287.7) after the fall campaign with their best overall tournament score (-17) coming at the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Oct. 6-7.
UT Martin returns seven golfers from last season to go along with a pair of talented newcomers. Exactly one-third of the roster consists of veteran seniors, while 2013 All-OVC performers Brendon Caballero and Ben Reeves also return for the Skyhawks.
The 2014 spring season officially opens for UT Martin on Feb. 15-16 when it travels to the Frito Lay/All-State Intercollegiate in Philadelphia, Miss., hosted by Jackson State. That marks the first of seven tournaments on the spring slate for the Skyhawks, concluding with the OVC Tournament in Florence, Ala. on April 24-25.
