MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to continue its historic start to conference play as the Skyhawks place their unbeaten record on the line in an Ohio Valley Conference rivalry game against Tennessee Tech on Monday, Jan. 20. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (13-6, 6-0 OVC) come into the game fresh of a commanding victory at Morehead State 74-52. Seniors guard Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome led the way for the Skyhawks by combining for 45 of the team’s 74 points. Butler tallied a game high 26 points, including three assists. Newsome tallied 19 points while snaring five rebounds.
Along with the victory, Butler and the Skyhawks scratched yet another record into the program and league’s record book by overtaking the OVC’s all-time scoring mark. With a layup at the 4:12 mark of the second half, Butler passed former Tennessee Tech standout Cheryl Taylor for the league’s previous all-time mark of 2,526 career points. Butler now sits atop the league leaderboard with 2,532 career points, good for 35th on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list while continuing her consecutive double figure streak to 116 straight games.
Tennessee Tech (7-11, 4-1 OVC) comes to town riding a season long three game winning streak, picking up a 77-68 victory at Tennessee State most recently. The Golden Eagles are led by Diamond Henderson who tallies 18.4 points per game to go along with a team leading 45 assists. T’Keyah Williams, Candace Parson and Hannah Goolsby each join Henderson by averaging eight points or more per contest.
Despite the Golden Eagles holding the series advantage 45-20, the Skyhawks have owned the series of late. UT Martin has won six consecutive contests, including three OVC Tournament championship matchups.
