December 29, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will move into the conference section of its schedule when it opens Ohio Valley Conference play on Monday, Dec. 30 at Jacksonville State. Tip-off for the first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
The Skyhawks (7-6) enter play the matchup fresh of a tough loss at the hands the nationally ranked, No. 20 Florida State Seminoles. UT Martin could not overcome a rough first half after forcing 12 turnovers in the second half and playing the Seminoles to an even 33-33 second half score.
Senior guard Heather Butler led the Skyhawks once again with 16 points, all of which came in the second half to extend her career long streak of 110 straight games in double figures. Butler's streak of 110 games ranks 21st in the NCAA record book. Chelsea Roberts joined Butler in double figures with 10 points. Jasmine Newsome and Ashia Jones both flirted with double figures, but finished with nine points each.
Jacksonville State (3-10, 0-1 OVC) dropped a tightly contested road battle at reigning OVC East champion Tennessee Tech on Saturday to opening conference play, 72-67. Leading scorer Candace Morton (17.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg) tossed in a career-high 24 points in the outing while Destany McLin (12.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg) added a double-double, notching 18 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
The Gamecocks hold the 17-13 series advantage, but the Skyhawks have owned the matchup of late, stringing together a five game winning streak over the Gamecocks. The Skyhawks are 8-13 all-time in OVC openers, including a 2-2 mark against JSU. The last time the Skyhawks won an OVC opener on the road, dates back Jan. 10, 2001 with an 81-76 overtime victory at Austin Peay.
