MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country coach Gordon Sanders has announced that junior Colin Johnson and sophomore Hayley Doty have earned most valuable performer accolades for the 2013 fall slate.

Despite battling the mono virus for most of the season, Johnson overcame the adversity to finish as the top male performer of the fall schedule. The Clarksville, Tenn. native, was the top finisher for the Skyhawks at both the Ohio Valley Conference championship and the NCAA Regional. His performance at the NCAA Regional set a school record with a 32:06.62 mark in the 10-kilometer race.

“After the bad news, we focused on salvaging the season with what Colin could still contribute for the team,” said Sanders. “Our only choice was to see what he could handle on a daily basis, so Colin has to keep his head in the game. It was a slow rebuilding during the season but finishing the season with another UTM record was outstanding!”

Doty, a first-year transfer from Lincoln Memorial, wasted little time adjusting to the Division I pace en route to top female honors. Doty led the Skyhawk women in four of the five races this fall. In just her first season at UT Martin, the White House, Tenn. native set a personal best of 19:17 which ranks 23rd on the school’s all-time cross country list.

“Hayley raced very consistently this season,” said Sanders. “She is getting a good feel of measuring a smart effort for her faster paces. With her highest summer mileage in her legs, Hayley did a bit more strength paces than she was used to. She really responded well to that and we intended to build up more for her track season.”

UT Martin will kick off the track portion its schedule on Feb. 1 when it travels to Southern Illinois for the SIU Invitational.
